Back to the Future of Handwriting Recognition
August 10, 2026
GRAIL's 1966 handwriting recognition scheme achieved 90 percent accuracy on symbols drawn by first-time users using an IBM System/360. The algorithm enabled real-time recognition of letters, numbers, and geometric figures via a pen-tablet interface. An interactive implementation of Groner's method is now available on GitHub for exploring these legacy heuristics.
