System Switch: When Should a Fast Decision Model Stop and Think?

Dual-process agents use a gated mechanism to trigger a reasoning vision-language model only when a fast actor encounters uncertainty. Evaluations on Doom benchmarks show zero-shot decision models from 0.15B to 9B parameters successfully identify item collection opportunities 1.6–1.8x more frequently than chance during error states.
