Interface Representations Differentially Impact Language Agent Performance

Using the MICA framework, a study across six models shows that Model Context Protocol (MCP) and CLI interfaces produce substantial differences in task performance and interaction cost for the same semantic operations. Representational differences between interfaces alter the model's decision process even when capabilities are matched.
