Emergent vs. Computed Functions in Cognitive Architectures
August 25, 2026
A minimal cognitive architecture study investigates whether reasoning and halting emerge from gradient descent or require computation. Results show that while competence emerges, the performance gains from adaptive halting (achieving 0.921 posterior self-observation) diminish significantly upon formal audit.
