Separate Answer Calls Improve Evidence Following Over Reasoning Trace Continuation

In HotpotQA and MuSiQue tasks, using a separate answer call instead of continuing a reasoning trace improves evidence-following by 29.9 to 60.6 points across GPT-OSS, Gemma 4, and Qwen 3. While the trace is necessary for accuracy, continuation tends to repeat stale conclusions when they conflict with new evidence.
