LLMs Underrepresent Minimal Responses in Counseling Dialogues

A cross-lingual analysis reveals that LLM-generated counseling dialogues lack the minimal responses, such as backchannel cues and brief empathic statements, that characterize human interactions. Current evaluation frameworks tend to over-prioritize content-rich replies, overlooking the interactional value of concise utterances in psychological support.
