What a Random Draw from the MCP Registry Contains, and What Tool-Use Benchmarks Contain Instead

A census of 24,135 Model Context Protocol servers reveals that 37.5% of npm/stdio servers fail to start entirely, causing nearly half of a random 400-server sample to fail the initialization handshake. While running servers show zero fatal JSON Schema violations, random draws exhibit a 58.8% omission rate for optional safety annotations compared to 41.5% in curated sets.
