Towards reliable multimodal disaster severity assessment through preference optimization and explainable vision-language reasoning
September 2, 2026
A two-stage training framework using Supervised Fine-Tuning and Direct Preference Optimization improves disaster severity classification accuracy from 73.64% to 78.29%. By deriving SFT rationales and DPO preference pairs from a single human-in-the-loop annotation workflow, the method increases Macro-F1 by 29% while enhancing explainable vision-language reasoning.
