LLMs Fail to Retreat to General Claims When Knowledge Boundaries are Exceeded

Probing via a T-REx-based benchmark reveals that while LLM activations encode knowledge boundaries and referent specificity, models fail to reconcile these signals during generation. Instead of retreating to safer, generic terms when uncertain, models continue to prioritize specific but fabricated details.
