UBE Encoding Reduces Multilingual Boundary Prediction Errors in Byte-Level Models
October 16, 2026
Universal Byte-Level Encoding (UBE) converts 1- and 2-byte UTF-8 codepoints into 2-byte UTF-16 format to increase the entropy of the first byte. This method allows causal predictors to better distinguish between grapheme cluster continuations and new characters using only one-symbol lookahead across 17 languages.
