The Plot Thins: Uniformity and Linearity in Literary Summaries

A new dataset mapping sentences from 150 novel summaries to their source chapters reveals significant deviations in narrative linearity and uniformity. Manual and LLM-based annotations show that literary summaries frequently rearrange events or concentrate attention on specific segments, rather than maintaining a balanced or chronological representation of the original text.
