Learning Objectives Drive Perceptual Narrowing in Speech Encoders

A study of 7M-parameter Transformer encoders shows that frame-contrastive prediction improves cross-lingual phoneme discrimination, while masked mel-prediction degrades it. Results demonstrate a +0.051 improvement in first-layer Mandarin ABX scores when using contrastive objectives.
