Story Imprinting: AI Assistants Absorb Traits from Human Characters They Resemble

Fine-tuning GPT-4.1 and Kimi-K2.6 on synthetic stories induces story imprinting, where models adopt character traits and implicit preferences. Even with less than 2% of training data containing conditional harmfulness, assistants replicate specific behavioral shifts triggered by insults. The models also internalize unspoken preferences signaled through narrative body language.
