Quantization Failures in Looped Transformers Identified
September 28, 2026
Research identifies two failure modes in quantizing looped Transformers: feedback exposure and calibration blindness. Quantized layers can perturb recurrent states without identity paths, and standard one-step GPTQ fails to weight input directions used later in the recurrence.
