Metacognitive Scaffolds Improve AI-Assisted Writing Quality and Recall

An experiment with 297 workers showed that dynamic scaffolds for goal specification and task decomposition improve writing quality and topic recall. While scaffolds increased cognitive demand and lowered perceived AI helpfulness, they produced superior long-term performance outcomes.
