SARE Quantifies Computational Effort Across Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Steps

Step-Aware Reasoning Energy (SARE) uses Centered Kernel Alignment (CKA) of hidden states to measure effort at the granularity of individual CoT steps. Analysis across three open-weight models shows that reasoning energy is non-uniform throughout a trajectory.
