Optimal attention allocation shifts between ramping intensity and rhythmic fluctuations depending on the metabolic cost of focus. Using a normative signal detection model, researchers show that rhythmic attention occurs when belief updates are driven by stable temporal priors rather than new sensory likelihoods.
