Activating the Annotator: Operationalising Lived Experience in Data Annotation

AXLE introduces a pre-annotation phase using scenario vignettes and axis-guided conversations to synthesize first-person micro-narratives for annotators. In a study of 1,040 ambiguous hate speech annotations, this method increased identity relevance compared to treating demographic data as static covariates. This approach aims to actively prime lived experience during subjective labeling tasks.
