Google DeepMind upgraded the Gemini API File Search tool with multimodal retrieval support, custom metadata filtering, and page-level citations for RAG pipelines. Developers can now ground responses in specific document pages across text and non-text modalities, improving verifiability. This directly competes with Azure AI Search and OpenAI file search for production RAG deployments.
