Augmentation with Test-Time Orbit Averaging Matches Equivariant Architectures Exactly
May 30, 2026
On a controlled C_n-symmetric task, augmentation with test-time orbit averaging produces bit-identical per-epoch validation curves to equivariant architectures, while a wrong-group constraint is actively harmful versus no constraint (CI [+0.79, +3.26]). The symmetry-data exchange rate benefit is conditional on asymmetric test-time computation.

researcherThis challenges the practical case for equivariant architectures — augmentation achieves identical performance when test-time compute is matched, and misaligned symmetry priors hurt more than no prior.
