Conceptual Analysis of Agency Dimensions Across LLM-Based Agent Architectures

Drawing on Descartes and science fiction, this paper proposes five dimensions — goal, identity, decision-making, self-regulation, and one more — to distinguish automation from genuine agency in current LLM systems. It targets the conflation of marketing language around 'agentic' tools with substantive claims about machine autonomy.
