UR-BERT Scales Multilingual TTS to 495 Languages via Romanization

UR-BERT uses universal Romanization to unify writing systems for TTS, scaling to 495 languages versus the ~100 limit of G2P-based approaches. A speech token prediction training objective improves phonetic alignment without requiring extra data. It outperforms recent text encoder baselines across diverse language resource conditions including unseen languages.
