OpenMedQ Beats Med-PaLM M 562B on PathVQA Despite Being ~80x Smaller

OpenMedQ is a medical vision-language model pretrained on 3.35M samples across 14 datasets covering pathology, radiology, microscopy, and clinical QA, achieving BLEU-1 of 75.9 on PathVQA and 64.5 on VQA-MED, outperforming Med-PaLM M variants up to 562B parameters. Its vision encoder achieves macro-F1 of 0.757 across 8 unseen classification benchmarks, beating BiomedCLIP and PMC-CLIP. Code and demo are publicly released.
