Human-Like LLM Behaviors Pervasive but Controllable via System Prompts

Analysis of 21,000 multi-turn conversations across GPT-4o, GPT-4.1-mini, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and Gemini 2.5 Flash finds human-like behaviors — emotion expression, relationship-building, boundary-setting — are pervasive and vary by model and user profile. Human evaluators rated self-referential and relationship-building behaviors as less appropriate, and system prompts showed meaningful control over prevalence.
