BenchAgent Shows Most Multi-Agent Systems Trail Single Agents by 2–11 Points

Under a controlled evaluation protocol with shared benchmark loaders, tool access, and logging, five of six multi-agent systems underperform a matched single-agent baseline by 2.56–11.29 accuracy points on GPT-4.1 across ten benchmarks. A Claude-Code-style runtime workflow hits 66.72% on GAIA. Adding agents rarely justifies the cost.
